What follows is a letter
from Sen. Tom Daschle (D-SD) to one of this South Dakota constituents
dated May 11, 2001. Sen. Daschle will become the leader of the
Senate in the days ahead. Please note the comments just below his
letter by Bruce Gagnon
May 11, 2001
Dear Constituent:
Thank you for your kind words. I appreciate your email, and it is
good to know your views on National Missile Defense (NMD).
I oppose the deployment of space-based weapons, which the U.S.
successfully make illegal under international law in the 1960s.
Your support is encouraging, and I am hopeful that you will continue to
be pleased with the job I am doing in Washington. It is certainly
an honor for me to serve as the Democratic Leaders of the United States
Senate, but the highest honor is knowing that I have the confidence of
South Dakotans like you.
Again, thank you for contacting me. Please keep in touch.
Sincerely,
Tom Daschle
U.S. Senate
Comments:
First Daschle never tells his true position in the letter on NMD.
He says he opposes "space-based weapons." NMD is not a
space-based weapon. NMD is a ground-based system, to be launched
from Alaska. TMD would be ground-based, sea-based, or air-based
but not "space-based."
In fact on May 27 Daschle told a national NBC-TV news program that he
supports NMD but that it must work properly. Daschle also told the
news program that he supports continued "research and
development". Research and development is underway for NMD,
TMD and the space-based laser and Daschle has supported all of these
development programs.
The Democrats are now playing a shell game of trying to fool all sides.
I just received a call from a British journalist who was inquiring if
Star Wars was dead because they Democrats will now take control of the
Senate. Already the Democrats are putting out the message that it is all
over. Nothing is over. In April, 1999 the Republicans &
Democrats voted to allow for deployment of "missile defense"
as soon as technologically feasible.
Until we see the Congress vote to cancel research and development of
NMD, TMD, and the space-based laser this will not be over. Please
don't fall for the Daschle deception!
