Westfield Barnes protesters
A dozen or demonstrators gathered outside the gates of the Air National Guard 104th Fighter Wing base at Barnes Municipal Airport in Westfield yesterday to protest the militarization of space.
Demonstrators, members of the Nuclear Weapons Abolition Task Force and members of other peace groups, said they wanted to spread the word about the dangers of the Bush administration's renewed interest in tactical nuclear weapons and a missile shield.
"This could be devastating for the planet Earth", Northampton resident Frances Crowe said.
Crowe and others said the demonstration is part of an international week of protest to stop the militarization of space.
When asked to comment on the presence of the demonstrators outside the base, Col. Michael R. Boulanger, commander of the 10th, said "That's why we live in America: You can feel
free to demonstrate whatever you want".
