On Tuesday, Russia will begin building a radar system that is to become part of a nationwide network for early warning in the event of a ballistic missile attack, RIA Novosti reported.

Russia has been planning to construct three new Voronezh-class radars since January as an addition to an extensive network of launch-alert systems. The network will be completed by 2020, Col. Alexey Zolotukhin said to reporters on Monday.

The nation already boasts four Voronezh-class radar stations, but only two are currently on combat duty, according to the wire service. One radar, located in the western region of Krasnodar, was activated in early June. The two other systems are still undergoing operations testing.

The first of the three additional systems will be built in west-central Russia in the town of Orsk, RIA Novosti reported. The other two radars are to be constructed in the Krasnoyarsk and Altai regions in central Russia, according to Zolotukhin.
